Language Matters
Words do more than describe experience. They shape how we interpret experience.
Resonance
In physics and engineering, resonance describes specific phenomena in which a system responds strongly under particular conditions, often involving oscillation and frequency.
Within Resonance Media, resonance is used as a broader systems concept.
We use it to explore moments in which relationships among the body, mind, environment, behavior, relationships, values, or other dimensions of lived experience appear mutually supportive, responsive, or reinforcing.
In this broader sense, resonance is not necessarily a claim about physical frequency. It is a way of asking:
What happens when the conditions within and around a system support a more integrated response?
Coherence
Coherence has technical meanings across physics, neuroscience, physiology, mathematics, and other scientific disciplines. Depending on the field, it may describe measurable relationships, coordination, consistency, or organization among signals or processes.
Within the Resonant Method, we also use coherence conceptually to describe the degree to which different aspects of a person's lived system work together rather than continually working against one another.
This may include relationships among:
Physiology
Attention
Behavior
Environment
Relationships
Values
Intention
Action
Coherence does not imply perfection, stillness, or the absence of tension.
A coherent system can change, adapt, encounter difficulty, and contain competing demands.
Unless a particular measurable scientific form of coherence is explicitly identified, our broader use of coherence therefore refers to the functional relationship and integration among all parts of a human system.
Attunement
Attunement describes increasing sensitivity and responsiveness to information.
A person may become more attuned to sensations within the body, another person's emotional state, environmental conditions, patterns of attention, changes in movement, or the demands of a particular moment.
Depending on the context, aspects of attunement may overlap with established areas of research including:
Attention
Perception
Interoception
Proprioception
Sensory processing
Social cognition
Interpersonal synchrony
Motor learning
Within the Resonant Method, attunement is used more broadly to describe the practice of noticing more clearly so that responding can become more appropriate to what is actually occurring.
We do not assume that attunement represents one singular biological mechanism.
Rather, it is a useful organizing concept for a range of perceptual, physiological, relational, and experiential processes.
Energy
In the physical sciences, energy has precise definitions and can be measured according to established physical principles.
In everyday human language, however, energy is also commonly used to describe subjective experiences such as:
Vitality
Fatigue
Motivation
Activation
Mental capacity
Emotional intensity
Readiness for action
Social atmosphere
When Resonance Media uses energy in this experiential sense, the word should not automatically be interpreted as a claim about an unidentified physical force or measurable energetic field.
Whenever greater precision is possible, we prefer it.
Rather than simply saying someone has "more energy," for example, it may be more informative to ask whether they are experiencing greater alertness, motivation, physical capacity, positive affect, autonomic arousal, or perceived vitality.
Language can become more useful as observation becomes more specific.
Vibration
Vibration has a clear physical meaning when describing oscillatory movement that can be measured.
The word is also commonly used in cultural, interpersonal, spiritual, and everyday language to describe the felt quality of an experience:
"The room had a different vibration."
"We weren't on the same wavelength."
"Something about the interaction felt off."
Such statements can communicate genuine, and powerfully informative subjective information about someone’s lived experience.
When discussing measurable oscillatory phenomena, we aim to identify them as such.
When vibration is being used experientially, traditionally, or metaphorically, we treat it accordingly.
Alignment
Alignment is another word we use primarily as a relational concept.
Within Resonance Media, alignment may describe increasing consistency between aspects of lived experience such as values, decisions, behavior, environment, relationships, and intention.
Alignment does not mean that every part of life must agree, nor does it suggest that discomfort necessarily indicates something is wrong.
Sometimes living in alignment with a deeply held value produces greater difficulty in the short term.
The useful question is not simply:
"Does this feel good?"
but:
"How does this relate to what I value, what I am experiencing, and what I am trying to cultivate?"
Regulation
Regulation is widely used in physiology, psychology, neuroscience, and everyday wellness language.
Biological systems continually regulate variables through interacting processes of feedback, adaptation, compensation, and control.
In psychological or somatic contexts, regulation may also refer more broadly to a person's capacity to respond to changing internal and external demands.
We avoid treating "regulated" as synonymous with calm.
A healthy adaptive response may involve activation, mobilization, excitement, anger, exertion, focused attention, recovery, or rest depending upon the situation.
From a Resonance perspective, the more meaningful question is often whether a response is appropriate, adaptable, and recoverable within its context.
Metaphor Is a Tool, Not a Mechanism
Metaphor has always helped humans understand complexity.
We use it intentionally.
A nervous system can be described as "listening."
An environment can "invite" a behavior.
A person can feel "in sync."
A life can contain "friction."
These expressions may reveal useful relationships without constituting literal scientific explanations.
Our responsibility is not to eliminate metaphor.
It is to avoid allowing metaphor to quietly become mechanism.
A useful analogy can illuminate an idea. It cannot, by itself, establish how the underlying biology works.
Precision Without Reduction
We believe scientific precision and meaningful human language can coexist.
Not every valuable human experience can be adequately represented by a biomarker, and not every subjective interpretation should be converted into a biological claim.
Our aim is to preserve both sides of that distinction.
When we know the mechanism, we can name it.
When we are describing an experience, we can describe it.
When we are proposing an interpretation, we can identify it as such.
And when language is being used metaphorically, we can allow metaphor to do what it does best:
Help us see relationships that might otherwise be difficult to perceive, without mistaking the map for the territory.
